Power to Gas is an energy storage technology in which electric energy is converted into (hydrogen or methane) gas. Gas is namely more easily store than electricity. Through an increase of wind and solar energy, a gap may exist between demand and supply of electricity. A spike in use of electricity can be very different from a peak in the generation of electricity. At such a peak, excess electricity can be converted into hydrogen. By adding CO2 to this, synthetic gas is created which can be inserted into our natural gas network.
At a more sustainable and cheaper solution, we use the existing oil and gas platforms on sea. The advantage of hydrogen is that you can save it easily in large quantities. For example in depleted gas fields. You can use the oil rigs and the pipelines that are already there to the Mainland.
Cooperation between the natural gas and wind sector in the North Sea also makes it possible to share equipment for transport and maintenance. Finally, as long as there is still gas pumped up, oil rigs can also run on electricity. And that saves a lot of CO2 emissions again!‹ Previous post Next post ›
